Winterizing Your Boat

It's getting cold and time to get the boat ready for storage.  There are a couple of things you can do to decrease the down time to zero when spring time arrives.  This article applies to most outboard vessels.

1.  Dry Storage.  I prefer dry storage when storing a boat.  It provides the best overall protection and allows easy access for maintenance and modifications.  So park your car in the driveway and back the boat in.

2.  Boat Cover.  Make sure that you get a cover that is properly fitted for your boat.  Price is usually between $300 - $600. Make sure that the engine (outboard) to include the lower unit is covered as well. Check the cover weekly for any damage or rot.  Wash the cover periodically to remove any debris that may accumulate.  Apply insect repellent to keep away those pesky spiders.

3.  Trailer.  Make sure all rust is removed and re-painted and all exposed parts are well oiled.  The tires need to have a piece of concrete or wood under them.  This will keep the tires from touching the ground and rotting.

4.  Engine and Oil.  Fog the engine through the carburetor and squirt a little 2 stoke engine oil into each cylinder.  I myself like to drain the oil and the gasoline out of  their respective  tanks when storing 60 days or longer.  If not you can add a fuel stabilizer to the gas tank.  I would still change the oil and filter before using the boat.

5.  Batteries.  If you have to remove from the boat store them in a dry place up on a shelf with heavy duty cardboard underneath.  Make sure to add distilled water to each one as needed.  Also connect them to a marine trickle charge unit.  This will increase the longevity of those "not so cheap" deep cycles.  Important:   Do NOT store the batteries on concrete.  This will shorten the battery life significantly.

While the boat is stored take the time to flush out any water lines like the bilge pump, cooler drains and live well(s).  Also apply a good coat of Armor All to the inside leather.  Clean all carpets and apply a good coat of marine wax to the exterior.

Following the above is a good way to keep your boat running for years and cutting down on time in the shop.  Happy Fishing!!!
